Updated October 24, 2026, with pricing checked the same day on koala.sh and frase.io. This article contains partner links.

The short answer

Koala AI is the better of the two for producing at volume: 45,000 words a month from $25/month, live Amazon roundups, KoalaWriter v2 and the Brand DNA SEO agent. Frase.io is the more complete one for managing a site’s performance: briefs, SEO and GEO scores, audits of existing pages and visibility tracking in ChatGPT and Google AI, from $49/month ($39 annually) for 10 articles a month. They complement more than they compete.

Quick overview of both tools

Koala AI (koala.sh, launched in 2022) generates long articles from a keyword by analyzing the ranking pages, adds internal links and publishes to WordPress, Shopify, Webflow or Ghost. Its long-standing strength: product roundups and reviews built from live Amazon data. Since 2026 it relies on Brand DNA, a knowledge base about your business paired with an SEO agent that reads your Search Console.

Frase.io organizes the whole content cycle: SERP-based research and briefs, writing, SEO and GEO scores, audits of existing pages with decay monitoring (“Content Guard”), and tracking of your visibility in ChatGPT and Google AI (plus Perplexity, Claude and Gemini on higher plans). Frase claims native writing in more than 70 languages, publishes to WordPress, Webflow, Sanity or Wix, and even offers its own hosted CMS, FraseCMS.

What changed in 2026

At Koala, the overhaul presented in the October 24, 2026 newsletter: instruction-driven KoalaWriter v2, Brand DNA and its SEO agent, Content Calendar Autopilot (Boost), Extended Research (Professional), an editor that grades your draft against ranking pages, an MCP server included from Starter, and the GPT-6, Claude Sonnet 5 and Claude Opus 5.5 models.

At Frase, the offer refocused on visibility in AI search: GEO scores, citation tracking, an agent that can publish on its own if you allow it, an MCP server and a command-line interface on every plan. Writing is no longer presented as unlimited: each plan includes a number of articles per month.

The core difference: Koala sells writing volume and production features (Amazon, bulk, Autopilot). Frase sells performance management (audits, scores, AI visibility tracking, decay alerts) with a more limited article count. A publisher who ships a lot will find Koala more generous; a site that wants to lift its existing pages will find Frase more useful.

Who should pick which tool

Pick Koala AI if:

  • you run an affiliate site and produce product roundups with live Amazon data;
  • you want volume: 45,000 words a month from $25;
  • you want scheduled, automatic publishing (Autopilot on Boost).

Pick Frase.io if:

  • you want to manage a site: briefs, audits of existing pages, decay alerts;
  • you want to measure your presence in ChatGPT and Google’s AI answers;
  • you publish less but better, with fine editorial control.

How to test Koala AI and Frase.io in one week

Both tools offer a trial with no credit card: 5,000 words once at Koala, 7 days at Frase. To make them truly compete, test them on the same keyword, ideally a query where your site already sits on page two.

  1. Day 1, pick two keywords: a new topic to produce, and an existing page that has stalled. The first judges writing, the second judges optimization.
  2. Days 2 and 3, Koala: add your site to Brand DNA, write precise article instructions, then generate the new topic with GPT-6 Luna to save your allowance. Track the time spent and the amount of editing needed.
  3. Days 4 and 5, Frase: build the brief for the same topic, compare its structure with Koala’s, then run an audit on your stalled page and apply the recommendations.
  4. Days 6 and 7, review: which draft needs the fewest edits? Which tool taught you something about your existing page? The first criterion often favors Koala, the second Frase.

Keep one thing in mind: a tool’s score is not a ranking guarantee. This test mostly tells you which tool fits the way you work.

Writing quality in English

Both tools were built with English content in mind, so language quality is less of a differentiator here than for French sites. The differences sit elsewhere: Koala’s v2 drafts lead with direct answers and cite sources when Deep or Extended Research is on; Frase gives you more control over the outline before anything is written. On product-heavy content, Koala’s live Amazon data saves the most time; on informational content where every heading must match search intent, Frase’s brief is the stronger starting point. Whichever you choose, a human pass for facts, examples and first-hand experience remains the difference between a usable draft and a page that earns links.

Verdict

The two tools remain complementary, and our underlying verdict does not change: Koala wins on volume, speed and affiliate content; Frase wins on SEO control, GEO and performance tracking. What changed are the amounts and the outlines: Koala now starts at $25/month and added an SEO score to its editor; Frase starts at $49/month ($39 annually) and caps the number of articles per plan.

The most coherent combo: Koala drafts at volume, Frase audits and lifts the pages that matter. At entry level and billed annually, that combo costs $59/month ($20 + $39). If you can only afford one, pick Koala if you need to produce, Frase if you need to improve an existing site.
